System Administrator – Unix System Administrator – Operations Engineer – Telco – Linux – CI/CD – Hybrid – 3 Months – £575/£600 (Inside IR35) – London – Immediate Starters

This is an opportunity to work with one of the UK’s most successful internet providers. It will be a chance to work with some of the latest technology on the market.

Individuals must have commercial experience in working within Telco/Internet provider companies and strong experience working with Unix Sytems.

Essential Skills:

Linux OS administration – Redhat/CentOs/Ubuntu to include the following:

  • Installation from TFTPBoot/Kickstart/PreSeed
  • User Management
  • OS Patching
  • Security Patching
  • Understanding of quotas and ACL
  • File system and volume management
  • Log management. To include ELK stack or similar
  • HA/Clustering
  • SSL Certificate management
  • Storage and Backup

Application Skills, understanding of applications and protocols:

  • SMTP
  • IMAP
  • DNS
  • RADIUS
  • DHCP
  • Squid
  • Apache HTTPD
  • NGINX HTTPD
  • Java application debugging
  • TLS

Networking:

  • OSI layers
  • Network Interfaces (Ethernet)
  • CIDR Addressing
  • IPv4 and IPv6 Configuration on servers
  • Routing on servers
  • Routing Protocols – Basic understanding of OSPF and BGP
  • Firewalling – Linux based
  • NFS
  • VLANs
  • Bridging
  • Basic understanding of Cisco Switches to include switchport config and STP
  • Traffic monitoring and analysis
  • Ethernet patching
  • WiFi Protocols

Databases:

  • Postgres/Oracle
  • MySQL/Mariadb
  • SQL queries from command line
  • NOSQL databases

Hardware

  • Server Builds
  • Racking and Patching
  • RAID

Configuration Management:

  • Understanding of CI/CD systems
  • Gerrit
  • Jenkins
  • Chef/Ansible or similar
  • Software repository management, RPM builds
  • Git

Virtualization/Cloud

  • KVM
  • VMware/ESXi
  • Basic understanding of at least one major Cloud Infrastructure (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud)
  • k8s and Docker

Monitoring/Security

  • SNMP
  • Monitoring Packages, e.g Nagios
  • Access levels – user and software
  • Log Analysis
  • Security best practices and awareness
  • Centralised Logging
  • ELK

Scripting Skills

  • Bash Shell Scripting
  • Ruby/Python/Perl – at least one of these

Responsibilities

  • To build, maintain, and monitor large-scale Linux-based ISP infrastructure
  • Software packaging, testing, and deployment
  • Third-line support for other teams within the business
  • Application configuration, deployment and monitoring
  • Project-based work, often involving multiple teams
  • Hardware and Software refresh
  • Documentation
  • On-Call support
  • Maintaining uptime and availability within KPIs
  • Liaise with Vendors, provide technical input to others as required
